Port’s new top cop Residents’ By Sarla Donovan LYTTELTON POLICE Station has a new sergeant. Craig Prior is the “new kid on the block” following a recent stint with the Canterbury road policing unit. He takes over from Sergeant Dave Knowles, who is now on light duties at Christchurch Central Police Station following knee surgery. Staff are rotated every two years. The 56-year-old (who celebrated his birthday just over a week ago) asked to be stationed in Lyttelton. He has a connection to the area, living just over the hill in Sumner. His parents also lived in Church Bay for a while and he used to spend childhood holidays over there. “I also worked at the station in Sumner before it was closed and I like the community and the type of work it involves.” When he’s not on the job, Sergeant Prior enjoys time in the garden and describes himself as an “avid” golfer. He has a handicap of 10 and plays interclub for Waimairi Beach. Most of the crime he deals with is theft and burglary, but there’s other work too. “We get our share of domestics. It’s not just Lyttelton and Sumner we cover, there’s also Woolston so it’s a fair population base. It’s all the inner harbour out to Port Levy as well. It’s time

consuming to get there but I try to get out and about as much as I can, even if it’s just a matter of going for a drive and having a presence.” Sergeant Prior joined the police in 1991. Before that he worked in horticulture, working in cut flower production, “chrysanthemums, freesias, roses, that sort of thing. A little bit different (to police work).” Friends who worked for the police got him interested. • Turn to page 7

By Sarla Donovan GOVERNORS BAY is to get new, improved speed signage, one year after a community working group was formed to lobby on the issue. Additional 50km/h speed limit repeater signs will be installed within Governors Bay and road markings put in place at speed limit change points on the settlement approaches. The move has been applauded by Governors Bay Community Association chairwoman Karen Banwell. Said Mrs Banwell: “This is very positive. We do have speeding issues going through the township – people on their

way home and not thinking, just going too fast – so this will be great, just a reminder to go 50km through town.” The group has also been lobbying to have speed limits on the approaches to the township reduced from 100km/h to 70km/h. • Turn to page 4

A lobby group has helped convince the city council more signage is needed in the area to warn motorists 50km/h is the limit through the hamlet. The next step will be to get the 100km/h on the roads approaching Governors Bay back to 70km/h. That goes out for public consultation at the end of the year. It should be a no brainer to reduce the speed limit. Governors Bay is a busy little place with cafes, the pub and more homes. That equates to more pedestrians so a gradual speed drop leading into the hamlet from both directions is simply common sense. We also introduce Sergeant Craig Prior to our readers on page 1. Beach steps organ ruled out By Sarla Donovan SCARBOROUGH won’t be getting a sea organ on the beach steps like those in Croatia, San Francisco and Blackpool. The city council has ruled out the idea after it was floated by former Sumner resident Alistair Wolfe. A sea organ works when waves push air through the organ pipes built into the Andrew steps. A planned Rutledge $250,000 refurbishment of the seaside steps at Scarborough beach, near the clock tower, and Ocean’s Cafe will be undertaken this summer. But the city council says the sea organ is not being considered as part of the repair work. “Work such as this would need to be consulted on and budgeted for as part of the city council’s normal process through annual plans,” said Andrew Rutledge, city council head of parks. The city of Zadar, Croatia, is famous for its sea organ, which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes installed under large marble steps. The waves interact with the organ to create

Mr Wolfe said if an organ was built at Scarborough, it would play for about 20min either side of high tide and could be shut off at night so it didn’t disturb residents. “With only three others around the globe, I’m told the combination of the gradient of Scarborough beach and steps, along with the position of the high tide mark, means it has the potential to be a world class piece of creative architecture.” It could transform the steps from something “uninviting” at present into something very

special, he said. However, reaction from local residents has been mixed. Susie Lomax, who lives on the Esplanade, said she walked down to Scarborough every day and was horrified at the idea. “I just sit, in that peace and tranquillity. Everybody agrees it’s just magic, we can see all the way to the mountains. The thought of something breaking that tranquillity is terrible. I looked at the (Zadar) organ online and it’s just ghastly.” Ocean Beach Cafe owner Jules Pritchard said while it would be a good tourist attraction,

residents who lived in the area might not like it. Scott Babington, chairman of the Christchurch Coastal Pathway group, said he hadn’t seen one before and, while it looked “delightful”, it probably wouldn’t work at the Scarborough steps due to tidal variation and wave action. “This wouldn’t be a priority and is unlikely to be able to proceed in the suggested site.” •HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think of a sea organ at Scarborough? NOISE TEST The proposed new site for the temporary Sumner skate ramp has had a noise assessment completed, but the result won’t be known for another two weeks. ELECTION SIGN VANDALS A spate of billboard vandalism has hit Lyttelton. Sergeant Craig Prior said vandals appear to have been targeting National Party billboards more than any others. He is asking for members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious to contact him at the Lyttelton Police Station on 378 0200.

News Refurbished Sumner School block to open By Sarla Donovan A NEW open-plan classroom block will open at Sumner School on Monday. The refurbishment of the school’s ‘Canterbury Block’ is part of the Ministry of Education’s Christchurch Education Renewal programme. Formerly housing five traditional classrooms, the block has been modernised and brought up to the ministry’s guidelines for modern learning spaces. It has a new layout to allow for collaborative learning in flexible spaces. It will be used initially by year 7 and 8 pupils. This is the first major project in Sumner School’s wider building programme. Said principal Stuart Cameron: “We are currently at the preliminary design phase of our master plan. This will see around $4 million being spent on the school buildings over a two to three year period.” There had been student involvement right throughout the renovation of the new block. Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson will officially open the new classroom block on Monday at 9am.

Speed sign lobbying comes up trumps • From page 1 City council manager transport operations Aaron Haymes said this will be included in the wider speed limit change proposals for Banks Peninsula, expected to be out for public consultation by the end of the year. Banks Peninsula Community Board chairwoman Christine Wilson welcomed the news. “Anything that’s going to help keep speeds down is going to be positive,” she said. The end of year consultation

on speed changes “wasn’t that far away.” It’s expected to cost around $2000 for the signage. The changes come after the working group presented a deputation to the community

board earlier this year. In June, Bay Harbour News reported that an out-of-control car had spun off Dyers Pass Rd and hit trees on Terry White’s (left) Dyers Rd property, landing close to his daughters’ bedrooms. Mr Haymes told Bay Harbour News the work is planned to be completed by the end of September. There were no plans for other settlements in the Banks Peninsula Ward to have

additional speed limit signage and markings. Meanwhile, speed limits on the approaches to the 50km/h area of the settlement are being reviewed. “They will be included in the wider speed limit change proposals for Banks Peninsula, envisaged to be out for public consultation by the end of the year,” Mr Haymes said. Residents are keen to see entry speeds into Governors Bay lowered, from 100km to 70km.

Little River group wants sign to stay By Sarla Donovan A LITTLE River group wants to keep a sign asking drivers to slow down – but the New Zealand Transport Agency say it needs to go. The sign was paid for by community group Love Little River as part of its campaign to make the township’s main road safer. Now the speed limit will be lowered from 70km/h to 60km/h, it’s time it went, said NZTA senior traffic and safety engineer David Scarlett.

“We had an agreement with the Love Little River group that the sign would be removed once we came to the end of the speed limit review. Now the speed limit will be changing on August 25, as part of that, we’d like that sign removed. We don’t normally allow that sort of signage on the highway.” Mr Scarlett said the sign wasn’t legal. NZTA had let it remain as a gesture of good faith. “We wanted to let the community know that we’re working with them to resolve

official signs be in the highway reserve.” He hoped the group would remove the sign by August 25. Taking it down as a legal measure would be a “last port of call,” Mr Scarlett said. Love Little River want the sign to stay until the limit is dropped to 50km, “as was the community’s wish.”

Wild weather causes more havoc WILD WEATHER lashed Banks Peninsula on Monday, causing flooding and slips around Little River and Akaroa. Little River chief fire officer, David Irving said there had been a lot of surface flooding on roads around the area. They were called on to pull out two “drowned vehicles” up the Kaituna Valley Rd. “There were two firefighters up to their waist in water.” People needed to heed advisories from police, to try and avoid such incidents, he said. Akaroa Police Senior Constable Anita Osborne said there had been flooding on Rue Lavaud and a slip at Robinsons Bay which partly closed the road. SH75 was closed overnight due to slips and flooding. “There’s lots of diggers and trucks out cleaning up,” she said.

Trailer thefts may be linked to contractors By Sarla Donovan A SPATE of trailer thefts across Banks Peninsula may be linked to the number of contractors working on the Christchurch rebuild. Sergeant Craig Prior said there had been four to five trailers stolen in the last few weeks. He said it was possible they could have been stolen for the purpose of on-selling to contractors. “It seems to be a trend. There’s definitely been an increase with incidents in Diamond Harbour and even out at Birdlings Flat.” The thieves mostly worked at night, so Sergeant Prior said it would pay for people to lock or chain their trailers to something fixed. “A trailer is an expensive item to buy.” A brand-new caged one could cost up to $4000.

Final preparation for centre’s grand opening

Steel barriers for crash site By Sarla Donovan WAIST-HIGH steel crash barriers will be installed at the site of a fatal crash on Main Rd. In March, Mt Pleasant resident Maureen Imrie, 73, died when the vehicle her husband was driving slammed through a wooden barrier near Shag Rock and plunged into the sea. Bruce Imrie survived the crash and has since said that if proper safety barriers were in place, his wife wouldn’t have died. Police are still investigating the crash. The new steel barriers can withstand impact from a large SUV travelling at 100km/h up to a medium-sized truck at a speed of 80km/h. A city council spokeswoman said they would be slightly lower than the rock wall beside the walkway through Moncks Bay, which is about 1m in height. That wall would not generally be subject to the same impact as barriers on a straight or inside bend, she said. With the Evans Pass route from Sumner to Lyttelton expected to reopen early next year, heavy vehicles and dangerous goods will once again be

New sergeant at Lyttelton station • From page 1 “It seemed like something I wanted to have a go at and I liked it enough to stay for 26 years. As corny as it sounds, the ability to be able to help people and make a bit of a difference has kept me here. If you don’t have that, then you aren’t really involved in the job.” His new role at the Lyttelton station involves mainly day work with some late shifts. “There’s no night shift component any more, which is a blessing.” He’s undecided whether he will stay in the police until retirement. It would have to be something quite interesting, “a challenge” to lure him away.

Seafarers service nets crowd

By Sarla Donovan ST SAVIOUR’S Church in Barrington was packed for Lyttelton’s annual Sea Sunday Service recently. The Reverend John McLister explained the origins of Sea Sunday to those present. “It is a time to remember those who work at sea, often in dangerous and exploitative work conditions. Seafarers can be in danger from shipwreck, piracy, industry accident and exploitation.” He thanked those who helped them, making special mention of the Lyttelton Seafarers Centre. Centre manager, Jess Armstrong, spoke about their work. “It’s been another busy year,” she said. “We’ve had nearly 7000 visits from seafarers since we opened two years ago.” A collection was taken for the operational costs of the centre. Independent Fisheries and Lyttelton Port of Christchurch were also thanked for their support. The youth orchestra from St Peter’s Upper Riccarton Church performed and were “just brilliant,” said Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson, who attended the service.

Lyttelton man directs women’s story By Georgia O’Connor-Harding GREGORY COOPER was a bit nervous when he was first asked to direct a show purely about the bond between six women. Directing The Court Theatre’s production Steel Magnolias meant the Lyttelton resident was the only male in the rehearsal room with six female actors, a stage manager, and a costume and wig designer. Set in a Louisiana beauty salon and Gregory based around Cooper how a close group of women cope when one of their own dies, the thought had crossed his mind – should a woman be directing this show? But Cooper, 43, had a hope that by being slightly outside the world of hairspray, make-up and gossip, he would be able to have an objective view on the 80s-themed show. “Perhaps things maybe women take for granted . . . in the way they react, talk to each other and support each other, I may go oh my God, that is really amazing because it is quite difference from my experience as a man,” he said.

The original story was written by Robert Harling as a way of coping with his sister’s death. The characters in the show are modelled on women Harling grew up with in his community. Cooper said the actors and everyone else involved in the show were generous, kind and gentle to him. Never being one to rule out writing or working on a show because it did not directly relate

to him, Cooper co-wrote the smash-hit rock opera musical That Bloody Woman with Luke Di Somma. “We did get a bit of oh my God what are two guys doing writing a show about Kate Sheppard and the suffrage movement?” he said. But Cooper said he and Di Somma just wanted to write a good show about an amazing story and woman. That Bloody Woman took five years to write.

“The main problem was as two male writers, we were really pussyfooting around the character of Kate Sheppard . . . as a result, her character was so boring (and) didn’t have any life. She wasn’t funny,” he said. But when Cooper’s partner Sarah suggested Sheppard needed to be a bit more like American singer Bette Midler, he realised the show needed to be more like a concert rather than a conventional play with songs. That Bloody Woman was a huge hit and debuted at the Christchurch Arts Festival in 2015. It was Cooper’s favourite show that he has written. Cooper began his career at The Court Theatre in 1993 and returned this year after living in Auckland and Melbourne. As for his next project, Cooper is looking to write a play inspired by the stray Soviet dog Laika, who died after becoming one of the first animals to be sent to outer space. TRADE CENTRE, DIY More products, faster service Ferrymead’s popular Mitre 10 MEGA has expanded, with a spacious, new facility opening this week for its trade and DIY customers, and a new Landscaping Zone installed. Located right next door to the current drive-thru facility, the new outlet replaces the former Trade drive-thru, which has been closed so earthquake repairs can be undertaken. This will be reopened at a later date as a drive-thru and storage area. The culmination of almost four years’ work, which involved a complete fit-out to an existing building, the new 3200sqm premises and drive-thru facility is 50 per cent larger than the current drivethru, providing a much greater space for product display as well as easier and quicker access for tradespeople and DIY customers to purchase supplies. Trade manager John Barltrop says the new space also makes it easier for Mitre 10 team members to process orders efficiently during busy periods, while continuing to provide a high level of service for customers. The space features wide aisles with an extensive range of framing and finishing timbers, along with all the common wallboards and fixings. The other outstanding feature of Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead’s new site is the outdoor Timber Yard and Landscaping Zone, covering a further 7000sqm. This new area presents an extensive range of Landscaping supplies and incorporates 19 bulk bins, stocking a wide range of product including compost, lawn mix, bark, aggregates and decorative stone, giving professional landscapers and DIY customers plenty of options for their home and property improvement projects. Trailers are available free of charge to transport landscaping purchases.

Your Local Views Old tyres should be recycled more There are better ways of dealing with used car tyres than stockpiling or landfill, writes Green MP Eugenie Sage

News Fashion A big new tyre storage site in Port Hills Rd got me thinking about what happens to old tyres. Stockpiling tyres outdoors risks heavy metals from the rain runoff leaching into stormwater and waterways and serious air pollution in the event of a fire. Kiwi car and truck drivers generate around four million used car tyres and one million used truck and other vehicle tyres each year. Around 70 per cent of these end up in landfills, stored on land or unaccounted for. Very few are recycled. That’s a huge waste of resources. Too many reusable and recyclable materials are being landfilled each year. This is partly because commercial landfill levies are too low to encourage other options, making waste disposal the cheap-

est option. It’s also because New Zealand has a very weak concept of product stewardship – where manufacturers and sellers take responsibility for the whole life cycle of goods they produce and sell. In an effort to deal with around three million of the five million tyres dumped each year, the Government has decided to give $17.4 million to Waste Management New Zealand and Golden Bay Cement to burn old rubber tyres as part of a cement

making process. Waste Management NZ will get $6.4 million towards building two tyre shredding machines, one in Christchurch and the other in Auckland. Most of the mulched tyres will be shipped north to the country’s biggest concrete

maker, Golden Bay Cement near Whangarei. It’ll get $13.6 million from Government and also use the steel rims from the tyres in the cement manufacture. The scheme will reduce the amount of coal used to make cement but it will cause significant air pollution. And it is loading the costs of dealing with used tyres onto the wider public, rather onto tyre manufacturers, sellers and users. A better option would be to put a price on tyre waste at the point of sale which covers the full costs of tyre collection, recycling and re-use. This would probably mean vehicle owners paying more for new tyres. I’d also like to see tyres declared a priority product under our limited product stewardship scheme to help encourage new uses for old tyres. A local builder recently emailed me with his suggestion of using old tyres in Rib-raft type foundations for new homes. Increasing our landfill levies could bring in up more revenue to help support research and new recycling processes and businesses. Luck of the Irish seals win for Bays By Gordon Findlater CENTRAL DEFENDER Ciaran Aherne’s first ever league double has put Ferrymead Bays in the driver’s seat to become the first club to win five Mainland Premier League titles. The Irish 33-year-old scored a goal in both halves during Bays’ 2-1 win over Nelson Suburbs in Nelson on Sunday. His second goal came in the final minute of the game and could prove decisive in the team’s hunt for their fifth MPL title. “All the lads were on my back celebrating, but the celebrations didn’t last that long because there was three minutes of extra time left,” said Aherne. “Being a central defender, they usually don’t let me past the half way line and they let me know about it if I do, he said. “Our coach Danny Halligan is usually screaming at me to get back if it happens.” The defender moved to Christchurch from Ireland six years ago and is in his second stint with the club after taking a season off due to work commitments. Migraine relief Your headache or migraine may literally be a pain in the neck

It’s not very well known that almost 13 percent of people – including childrensuffer from headaches and migraines. It is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world and causes 91 percent of the people it affects to miss work or reduce their functional capacity. In the past 10 years, the understanding of what causes headaches and migraines has significantly changed. The research now shows that the sensitisation of the brain stem is what
